Homepage

Welcome to the website for the NHS Professional Organisations branch of UNISON (the UK's foremost public sector union). This site has been designed as a tool to provide members (and prospective members) with clear and focused information on:

  • Who is in the branch
  • The concerns of fellow members
  • What to do if you need advice at work
  • Current campaigns

Using the site

The links to your right provide a way to navigate through the different organisations within the branch as well as learn about more general trade union and branch issues. We are always wary of assuming people know what we’re talking about so we have included a link to ‘the basics’ that sets out what we mean by terms such as ‘branch’, ‘representative’ and ‘AGM’. In this way, we hope that this website will be truly useful for all members, whether you have years of experience or whether you have just joined your first union.

Multi-organisational branch

For some UNISON members, their branch will cover their distinct organisation - for example a NHS trust or local authority - and a member can ask advice from any representative within that branch. Our UNISON branch is different in that it is composed of several organisations, and providing advice to members in different organisations presents difficulties.

Our branch has therefore adopted a practical policy of asking representatives to respond to those members who work within their own organisation. Representation is therefore largely self-contained within its constituent organisations. Representatives can seek advice from our branch officers who, in turn, can act as a conduit to regional officers when necessary. The key to effective representation in our branch therefore rests on having at least one representative in each organisation.
