- CPPiH was formally abolished on 31 March 2008.
The big picture
- Abolition of CPPIH was first announced as part of the Review of Arms Length Bodies in July 2004. A further year’s extension was granted, and the new system for patient and public involvement was announced as part of the White Paper, ‘A Stronger Local Voice’ in November 2006.
- First round of restructuring and redundancies took place in September 2005 – January 2006, as the Department of Health budget cuts took effect. Around 1/3 of staff were made redundant or left during that period.
- A small ‘core staff’ of finance and admin staff were then employed to wind up the Commission by 31 March 2008.

For the purposes of bargaining the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health recognised UNISON. Stewards of this union represented members on the Employee Forum, on all issues relating to pay and to terms and conditions. The Commission was not part of the Agenda for Change programme.
Organisational history
Established in 2003, the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health (CPPIH, or the Commission) was an independent, non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Health. It was the co-ordinating organisation for around 500 volunteer patient and public involvement Forums for each NHS Trust in England.
